Dog Surfing: Teach your Pekingese to Rule the Waves

Dog surfing is quite popular especially in the tropical nations. And a lot of pet owners would pay for dog surfing lessons for their beloved pet. Others may be skeptic about the idea but surfers have been surfing with their pets for years. Professional surfers from Waikiki, Hawaii were documented to be surfing with their pets since the 30’s.

It wasn’t until the year 2006 where 2 companies introduced and organized dog surfing competitions in California. One was Loews Coronado Bay Resort. Last 2005, they wanted to find a way to promote their hotel as a pet friendly one. They made the program Loews Loves Pets where guests are welcome to stay in the hotel together with your pets. The company would offered a menu specifically designed for them by welcoming each canine with a gift basket and surfing lessons.

Dog Surfing: Teach your Pekingese to Rule the Waves

How to Teach your Peke to Surf

  • Get a Doggy Surfboard. See to it that you will get a surfboard for dogs, otherwise he would be harmed from this experience. Foam boards are not ideal for them since it tears their skin after using it for a while. Also, your peke might also chew on it plus foam boards contain wax which is bad for your dog’s paws. The hard-surfaced dog boards are ideal and see to it that you get the one that has a standard ocean rescue safety release handle on the tail portion. Another plus is the fact that you can customize this kind of board.
  • Keep Safe. Be sure that you would get your pet necessary gear like life jackets, wetsuits, dog beach towels, waterproof bungee leashes, pet tent, travel bed and clean water before indulging on this activity.
  • Starting it Small. Do not immediately bring your pet into the ocean. Begin in a pool and allow him to love the water. Also, make sure that you yourself know how to surf because your pet would be confused if you are not doing it with him.
  • Be an example. Demonstrate to your pet on how excited you are in the water and how eager you are to get in the board so that he would also be fired up to join you. Encourage him to come into the water or to play nearby while you enjoy the waves so that he can see you.
  • Let him be used to the board. Allow him to be comfortable with his board, thus you can feed him on it at home or let him play on the board and give him belly rubs while on it so that he can create positive association with the board. Once comfortable, test his balance by letting him choose which side of the board he prefers to be. Smaller dogs usually prefer on the nose part while the heavier ones love to stay in the middle or back of the board. depending on his size, he should be about 2/3 of the way back with his tail over the board’s fin. Bear in mind that if he is too far forward, his board would nosedive under the wave.
  • Get him a PFT. Be sure to pop your pet’s Personal Flotation Device since this would give your pet a greater flotation in case he would be wiped out by the waves.
  • Paddle Time. Using a long board  get on it wit your pet and paddle out unto the waves. For best results, you should be positioned behind your pet while paddling out. If you are using a boogie board or short board, place him on the board and push him gently over the breakers.
  • Catching the Wave. Begin with small waves, around 1-2 feet. Even pro and champion surfer dogs don’t tackle waves that are above 3-4 feet. Push him off and catch a wave for him. Do this over and over again until he gets used to it and allow him to surf on his own as well. Now, your pet is already surfing. Enjoy!

Dog surfing requires a lot of water exertion, and the waves can be rough sometimes, thus make sure that both you and your pet are strong swimmers before attempting this sport.

Other places that is also ideal for this event would be the beach or park or a doggie day care facility.
  • Party Decors. Be creative in decorating your place up. You can draw big paw prints on the sidewalk which would lead to your place for your guests’ amusement. Go get a cute bowl for the treats and hand them over as each guest would enter your place. Do not forget the party hats your them to wear. Use balloons, drawings, etc… to decorate the chairs and tables in the area. Find a decent doggy-inspired table cloth to use for the event.
  • Guest list. Think of your pet’s closest furry pals. See to it that they are all spayed, neutered, well socialized and with updated vaccines. Avoid inviting dogs that have issues on aggression and be sure to have enough human supervision during the entire event.
  • Invites. There are lots of cheap dog invites on the net which you can readily purchase or you can go to your local pet store. If you want a more customized look, then try making your own by cutting out bone shapes from a stationary. Place a photo of your pet along with details such as: time, location and date of the event.
  • Party Food. See to it that there is an abundant supply of clean water for your pet and his guests trough out the day as they would tend to sip a lot especially after playing. Place the doggy treats on the buffet table and have a supply for it for the entire day. Go and get a canine birthday cake for your pet from the shop or you can make one on your own. Do not forget to also serve drinks and finger foods for the humans as well.
  • Fun and Toys. Keep the entertainment alive by having lots of balls, chew toys, tug ropes, frisbees and other kinds of toys available for everyone. Play ball with them and allow each visitor to showcase his talent with his owner.

Dog birthday party ideas are abundant if you just do your research well. It is not that hard to organize however it takes a lot of responsibility to pull it through. If you are planning to invite kids over, see to it that the invited dogs do well with kids. And you should also have the initiative to reach out to the invited owners and ask about their pet’s dietary restrictions and have a first aid kid nearby in case of an untimely event.

How to Play with your Dog: Deepen your bond with your Pekingese

Is it really necessary to ask how to play with your dog? I bet everyone can do that but the thing is, not everyone have the time nor consider of playing with their beloved pet. Playing with your pekingese or any dog for that matter will help you build a much stronger relationship between the two of you. By playing, he would be able to stimulate his mind and will allow him how to control his energy when you want to settle him down. Besides, a fun game can be healthy for the both of you. If you house a number of dogs, then that set-up would automatically provide a social stimulation of interaction among themselves. And the single dogs would greatly benefit from the interaction he would get from his pet parent.

As the owner, playing with your dog has its own benefits as well. The enthusiasm your dog would manifest is highly contagious thus happiness would spread. Any owner that would arrive home from a hard day’s work and would be greeted by a loyal and happy dog could not help but feel good about it. The mood shift can help your ease your stress thus making you more relaxed and productive.

Play is a wonderful way to instill general training and control into your dog. Dog training games revolve around commands like sit, stand, fetch and stay can all be taught when you are horsing around with a toy. As a matter of fact, your dog is more likely to learn and retain all your commands when on play mode. Optimism and happiness would encourage his learning process.

Having fun with your pet is such a bliss. May it be a simply game of fetch, or simply throwing a ball for him to retrieve, teaching him to jump into your open arms or simply running around the house playing chase. Such enjoyment is a wonderful reward especially if you had a stressful day at work, playing with your four-legged companion would definitely kiss your stress away.

How to Play with your Dog

Things to consider:

Don’t Compete for the Prize. By doing so you are over-stimulating him as it would encourage a pushy, dominant behavior. He won’t be able to tell that the game is not the same anymore if the one involved is already a child. If encouraged, it would become out of control and things would rather get dangerous.

A person is not a toy. You, yes you, are not a toy and always remember that. Do not in any way involve your clothes, body parts as part of the game. You are not a dog, so don’t act one otherwise he would become the alpha male and would even end up biting you.

Set the rules. Ground rules are important. This would encourage control on your part. Let him learn the commands your way.

Two sets of toys. Give him two sets of toys. One is the pacifier (chew toys), pick one that he would definitely choose over your furniture, shoes and clothing. Second are the interactive types (squeaky toys, balls, tug toys), these are the ones which he would enjoy playing with you.

There are various ways on how to play with your dog. There are breeds that enjoy a specific kind of game that is instilled in their genes. So, you better do a background check on what your pekingese would love to do for his past time and engage on it.

Fun Dog Games: Go Ahead and Play with your Pekingese!

People who frequently play with their beloved pets develop respect, communication and understanding with their dog. Fun dog games are activities that you do with your pekingese would actually require the two of you working and communicating together in a way. While others may argue with me on this one but I distinguish sports from games. Games have goals but they don’t include titles, placements, and ribbons. Games also have competition but that is competition of the moment.

Playing games with your pekingese (or any other dog) is really good for your rapport. They may not be humans like us, but they are very social animals and playing is an important key in harnessing their social relationships. You can teach him a lot of things while you guys are playing. You can teach him how to obey you in a fun and positive way.

Some Fun Dog Games:

Hide and Seek
The item here can be anything or a person even. This is easiest to teach when there are 2 humans involved in the game, one who will hide while the other will encourage the dog to find the one hiding. Once found, you guys should praise him, give him his favorite treat or go cuddle him.

Find It Game
This is for the treats which they want to find. Dogs can simply not go wrong when it comes to finding food. Show him his favorite dry food or treat and throw it a certain place and tell him to search for it. This game is very interesting for them, for some reason they don’t get bored when it comes to hunting down food. You can command him to stay while you go hide the food in the other room. Then go back to him and tell him to find the hidden treat. Happy hunting!

The Muffin Tin
Go get a muffin tin, begin with the 6-muffin tin and place a tin on each cup. Put tennis balls on half of the cup and show it to your dog. After a while, your pekingese would discover that pushing the balls away would mean more treats. Then when he finds that out, put treats on several cups only and use a bigger tin (12 or 24 muffin tin). Rest assured your dog will love this game!

Go Bananas with Toys
Toys can greatly minimize your dog’s boredom, give him exercise, control his behavior and not to mention enhance your relationship with him. Go find his favorite chew toy or even play tug of war with him, by the end of the day you would be happy that you shared such bond with your dog.

These are just few fun dog games that I listed, there are still lots more especially for outdoors. All you have to do is just to research for it and learn which ones are beneficial and fun for both you and your pekingese. Though I suggest a less rough kind of game since they are such vulnerable breed. Just have fun and enjoy his company for more years to come.
