Exercising your Dog – Make it fun for your Pekingese!

Exercising your Dog – Make it fun for your Pekingese!

Owning a pekignese is one of the most rewarding life expereinces you will ever have. In line with that, exercising your dog is your responsibility as well. Regular exercise would keep your pekingese’s joints, heart, muscles and lungs in good condition. The pekingese is a loyal, stubborn, charming and fiery pet who will give you plenty of joyous years.

The peke is a breed that is energetic, courageous and strong-willed although there are times that he would be stubborn! This toy breed is known for their independence, stubborness and being a picky eater! Thus don’t be worried if one day your pekingese won’t eat because she is not in the mood.

At home, this breed makes an amazing watchdog and they do well with kids as well. They assume the guardian role immediately when it comes to their family. Exercising your pekingese is very essential and is not that hard of a task if you know how to train them. You should be able to train them on a leash and socializing from an early age. Your pekingese enjoys his daily walk but his all time favorite activity is sleeping and when he does, don’t bother him because he hates that.

Both the adult and young pekes tend to be energetic. But being a tiny dog entails less exercise requirement. Because of their small size, they do well in indoor living, which makes them ideal for apartment owners. They don’t need big yards just to play around and get the exercise he needs. A pekingese can already tire himself out while playing fetch in the living room.

In choosing the appropriate toy for your pekingese, bear in mind that he has a flat nose thus making it hard for him to grasp on balls. He would prefer the stick type of toy.

Exercising your Dog

Pekingese need a daily walk, where the dog is made to heel beside or behind the person holding the lead, as instinct tells a dog the leader leads the way, and that leader needs to be the human.  Play will take care of a lot of their exercise needs, however, as with all breeds, play will not fulfill their primal instinct to walk. Dogs who do not get to go on daily walks are more likely to display behavior problems. They will also enjoy a good romp in a safe open area off lead, such as a large fenced in yard. Get your Pek accustomed to the leash when they are still a puppy. Some owners have told me their Pek will walk up to 4 miles on a nightly walk.

Fun Methods to Exercise with your Pekingese

  • Visit the Dog Park. This is where his socialization skills would develop. Let him enjoy his time there and play with other dogs.
  • Hike or run with your pekingese. May it be hiking, walking or running, ,ix it up sometimes and go for a different routine and place to exercise with your dog.
  • Games galore. Playing games with your pekingese is one form of exercise. This is his opprotunity to exercise his brain along with his body as well. You can do hide and seek and give him a treat if he finds you.
  • A round of ‘fetch!’ Majority of the dogs love to go and retrieve things and this is a great exercise for them! Just keep your tosses low since jumping can cause soft tissue injuries.
  • Go to the beach. Play frisbee or go swimming with your pekingese. Take note that not all dogs are born swimmers, so don’t force your pet if he is afraid of the water. Just have fun with him for the day.

Exercising your dog doesn’t literally mean that you should go running with him eveyday. There are lots of fun activities in order to exercise him while enjoying your quality time and bonding as well. Just go out and have fun with your pekingese, enjoy his company and live life to the fullest.
